Mechanical Engineering Design and Manufacturing / Linköping

The module makes focus on developing abilities and skills in mechanical design and aspects of manufacture what is important features of the competence in product development. Through the studies of the module “Computer-aided Analysis of Structures”students learn to perform engineering analysis of mechanical structures and get an opportunity to practice by carrying out individual project. Theoretical background in numerical methods, fluid mechanics and heat transfers serve as the basis for engineering system analysis including phenomena of different physical nature. Aspects of manufacturing technology applicable in developing technological path for originally designed parts id touched.

The Courses

Spring Semester

BSc
Thesis-Mechanical Engineering 18 ECTS
and elective courses from list.

Mechatronics – 6 ECTS

Course contents: 

  • ‍Basic theory: Modelling of components and systems.
  • ‍Simulation technique: Simulation of system dynamics.
  • ‍Measurement technique: Measurement of flow, velocity, position, tempe-rature, pressure etc. Background of energy technology, system aspects, sensors and signal processing. Servo systems for control of position, velocity and force. Control principles and dynamic behaviour. Distributed digital control systems, signal conditioning and field bus systems.

Introduction to Computational Mechanics – 6 ECTS

Course contents: 

  • Introduction into the use of computational techniques in applied mechanics
  • ‍Stress analysis of 2-dimensional rod structures/trusses (with the direct stiffness method); applications, basic relations, matrix problem formulation, laboratory work
  • ‍Linear elastic stress analysis of 2- and 3-dimensional solid bodies; applications, basic relations, FE formulation, laboratory work
  • ‍Linear elastic stress analysis of 2- and 3-dimensional solid bodies; applications, basic relations, FE formulation, laboratory work
  • ‍One- and multi-dimensional heat conduction analysis; applications, basic relations, FE formulation, laboratory work
  • ‍Orientation regarding other application fields for FEM such as transient dynamics, structural optimisation, material mechanics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer, including laboratory work
  • Evaluation of results including material-related questions (standing issue in the course)

Engineering Materials, Welding and Manufacturing Technology – 6 ECTS

Course contents: 

  • Joining techniques (welding, brazing, soldering etc.) and their influence on the structure and properties of the materials
  • Material aspects on industrial manufacturing processes, like metal forming, metal cutting, casting.
  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques
  • Heat treatments and surface treatments
