As organizations play one of the most central roles in modern society, the subject of organizations and interrelated areas is studied from many different perspectives. This course gives a more in-depth knowledge of some major issues in organizational and managerial studies. One important step towards achieving this is to be familiar with the various schools of thought concerning organizations. Accordingly, we focus on different organizational and managerial paradigms and investigate the concepts, models and managerial practices related to different organizational paradigms. Topics include history, emerging patterns and some main streams of modern management thinking.
Ethical issues play an important role in various types of organizations in different parts of the world. This course problematizes and sheds light on ethical issues on different levels and in relation to different stakeholders. Key ethical theories and research are presented and discussed.
Organizations’ work with ethical issues as well as the effect of their actions are scrutinized. The individual’s possibilities for acting ethically are analyzed.
Different ethical issues and dilemmas are approached from a range of theoretical perspectives.
The course focuses on general theoretical and empirical findings on leadership and culture. The idea of effective leadership in different organizational contexts is studied and related to the concepts of national culture and organizational culture. Research into Scandinavian leadership is highlighted and put into an international perspective. Both classic and contemporary views on leadership and culture are discussed and illustrated through practical cases.
Human Resource Management (HRM) and Leadership are two fields of research and practice that are intimately intertwined, and that are of great importance for students’ abilities to succeed well in roles as managers or leaders. The overall aim of the course is to offer students basic knowledge about HRM and leadership by introducing central topics within the two fields of research, and by offering possibility to learn by practice. The core content of the course includes classic as well as recent studies into HRM and leadership, also relating to how these dimensions in an organization relates to strategy as well as operative activities. The students will be introduced to central contributions within research on HRM and leadership, and they will also get the opportunity to apply some of this knowledge in practice. An increased knowledge and understanding of these two areas will provide students with greater possibilities to consciously and in a competent way manage their own future performance and career and also to, in the role as managers/leaders, take on the responsibility for managing and supporting the performance and careers of subordinates.
In this course we will use the international business background as a steppingstone to explore the new demands placed on HR work as a firm develops internationally. Within the frameworks of local responsiveness, global integration and coordination we will discuss issues such as global talent management, global leadership development, global teamwork, expatriate management, and cross-cultural competence. This course will be very much based on casework, where you will analyze different types of international organizations and their HR structures and challenges.

When you have been selected by your home university, the application procedure will be as follows:
1. Search for courses in the course list above. Please see under "Course information and timetable" in the left hand menu before you choose your courses. Note that full-time courses at Faculty of Arts and Sciences run during four (4) periods per semester. You can choose only one full-time course for each period.
2, Check the specific requirements for each course that you want to study and make sure that you are eligible for all courses that you select.
3, Fill out the application form on-line which will open in September. The application form includes personal data, academic background, choice of courses and the period of study for your stay at Linköping University.
4, Upload the required documents:
- Transcript of records of all university education
- Proof of English*
- List of ongoing courses
- Degree certificate if applicable
All documents need to be scanned into one pdf file.
5. If you want to apply for accommodation through Linköping University make sure to cross that box on the application form. Please note that you also need to apply and sign up with other landlords and check the notice boards. Linköping University cannot guarantee accommodation.
6. Submit the form. A print-out version of your application will open for your reference.
