Visiting Students - EUR 1500,00; Fee waivers may apply in the case of student exchange schemes like Erasmus; Students wishing to do a single course unit from an Exchange Package can opt to apply for “isolated course units” where the fees range from €40,00 - €60.00 per ECTS credit, depending on subject area.

The Courses

Advanced Network Architecture - 6 ECTS

The main objective of this course is the study of the advanced networking subjects, some of them already present in the communication networks, in order to enable an integrated vision of the communication networks, including the aspects of network, services and user requirements, management, multimedia communications, mobility and mobile networks, authentication mechanisms, content distribution networks, and actual and future models of service integration. The perspective taken is very much oriented towards commercial public networks.

Security - 6 ECTS

The course main objective is to present is to present and describe the main concepts of security in computer systems. As many security solutions make use of cryptographic techniques, in this course we also make an introduction to criptography and cryptanalisys. Security is studied in several contexts, such as programs, operating systems, virtual machines and data bases.

Data And Knowledge Engineering - 6 ECTS

In many scenarios, the information representation in tables and organized in a relational model is inaproprate when not impossible. The main objective of this discipline is to show to students how to model, represent and retrieve information using a disticnt aproach from the relacional model. We will work mainly with information cached from the internet and document oriented.

We plan also to introduce concepts of information classification, such as thesaurus ans ontologies.

Service Engineering - 6 ECTS

To provide an overall view of the fundamental aspects related to Telecommunications Service Architectures. To present advanced software and service architectures for advanced networks.

You can choose between one of the two following course units:

Virtual And Augmented Reality - 6 ECTS

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) mainly allow a visual experience (but also multi-sensorial), through specific hardware as head-mounted displays and interaction devices, or complex facilities as CAVEs (Cave Automatic Virtual Environments). The appearance of low cost systems opens the door to affordable VR and AR applications based on desktops or running on mobile devices. There are currently various practical applications of such systems. However, they are technically challenging as they imply tracking the users and displaying visual or multi-sensorial information according to their location and orientation. Human factors issues are also difficult to tackle.

This course aims at introducing students to basic concepts, methods and tools allowing the design and development of simple VR and AR systems.

Main objectives:

1. Definition and overview of Virtual and Augmented Reality main issues and applications.

2. Introduction to basic concepts, methods and tools needed to design, implement and evaluate Virtual and Augmented Reality systems.

3. Foster the ability to read and evaluate scientific literature, practice in conveying research results to an audience, as well as teamwork skills.

Information Recovery - 6 ECTS

The aim of this course is to provide students with knowledge and skills on techniques and algorithms used related to information retrieval and information extraction  (IR and IE). After this course the student should be able both to understand the functioning and to develop solutions for:

1) systems for Web-crawling

2) storage and indexing of texts

3) information retrieval

4) information extraction.

How to apply

Application procedure is similar to mobility applications, that is, candidates are either appointed by their institutions of origin or the candidate addresses directly the International Office that guides the candidate and contacts the candidate’s institution of origin. Application may be done on paper, by post and by email and is checked by the International Office.

What are the necessary documents?

- application form

- learning agreement signed by the candidate and the institutions of origin

- transcript of records

- photocopy of valid personal identification document (ID card or passport)
