This course aims at providing an overview of the chemistry and potential applications of synthetic and natural macromolecules. At the end of this course students should be able to:
Classify polymeric materials. Explain the meaning of average molecular weight.
Correlate the structure and properties of these macromolecules based on intra and intermolecular interactions.
Apply the concept of molecular engineering using tools such as:selection of synthetic mechanism, modification of terminal groups, and characterization techniques.
Correlate the basic chemical structures of the main polysaccharides with the corresponding supramolecular structures,physic-chemical properties and reactivity.
Explain the 3D structure of proteins based on the different levels of organization and interactions responsible for their stabilization;Explain the functional properties of proteins with industrial application and the factors affecting them; Select methods of purification, detection and characterization.
Objectives of this course:
- To recognize Chemistry as a central subject in the broader and interdisciplinary context of Nanotechnology, in particular in aspects related to the synthesis, assembly and manipulation, reactivity and characterization of functional nanomaterials.
- To understand that materials at the nanoscale level can exhibit unique properties that depends on their dimensions and to recognize the potential of chemical methods in controlling those properties.
- To learn the fundamentals related to the synthesis, characterization and reactivity of several classes of nanomaterials.
- To apply chemical methods in the synthesis of morphological uniform nanomaterials and further processing in functional nanostructures.
- To recognize the potential and risks associated to applications emerging from Nanotechnology.
The aim of this course is to give students the basic knowledge of the chemistry and structure of wood and lignocellulosic materials in general, the chemistry associated to their industrial processing into cellulosic pulp and paper, as well as as to demonstrate the potential of lignocellulosics as a renewable source of chemicals and materials.
The fundamental concepts and steps of the drug discovery process will be described and explained, along with the practical examples and case studies. The students will be involved in the learning process by asking questions in an interactive way and by solving some exercises. These teaching-learning process will allow the students to reach the first three objectives described above.
In the second of the course the students will be trained to critically read and discuss case studies and recent journal publications from the area of medicinal chemistry. In that way each one of them will present and discuss a case study taken from a textbook and from an original article taken from a high-impact scientific journal, both as oral presentations. This process is related with the 3rd and 4th objectives described above.
Provide a complementary formation of the student in the Laboratory work through a set of transversal practical tasks, including the use of laboratorial techniques and methods of all areas of Chemistry, the bibliographical search, the work planning, and presentation of the results in oral communication or poster format.
Application procedure is similar to mobility applications, that is, candidates are either appointed by their institutions of origin or the candidate addresses directly the International Office that guides the candidate and contacts the candidate’s institution of origin. Application may be done on paper, by post and by email and is checked by the International Office.
