Description

Project management is the second out of four transferable skills recommended by EU Principles for Innovative Training’ transferable skills (European Commission, 2011). This course aims to equip PhD students with knowledge and skills to manage successfully manage their projects and collaborate with supervisor(s), peers and other stakeholders. The focus is twofold: 1) enhance skills on time and resource planning and management, and 2) enhance skills in managing people and collaboration (namely, providing feedback, management of expectations and conflicts). The course takes a hands-on approach, where participants’ projects, self-perceive strengths and challenges, are the point of department for a series of exercises that uses different approaches and tools to manage successfully a project and people.

Learning outcomes    

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Define project management and uses project management triangle to define the three corner stones of project management: time, resources and people.
  • Discuss challenges in project planning as PhD students and outline an action plan to address such challenges.
  • Apply different strategies to manage time and at different levels.
  • Define interpersonal skills needed to manage a project in collaboration with others (e.g. supervisors, peers and other stakeholders).
  • Practice different interdisciplinary skills in a project, namely providing feedback, managing conflicts and expectations.
  • Discuss challenges in project collaboration as PhD students and outline an action plan to address such challenges.

Format

Online. Participants should be available on the following dates: 23 and 24 May 2022. Preparation for the course will start one month before the online sessions and includes a 750 words small essay.

Evaluation

The successfully completion of the course requires:

  • Presence and active participation in all synchronous activities. Active participation is understood as provide inputs and contributions when requested, whether in group exercises, lectures and plenum presentations and discussion.
  • Carry out and deliverable the preparation and assignments requested in the due date (i.e. in the deadline given).
