The Water Management group within the Civil Engineering department carries out multi-disciplinary research and provides education in the areas of water systems and management. The group takes global leadership in water footprint research. During the past ten years, part of the group’s research has focussed on the relations between water and energy.
The positionWith the new assistant professor, we aim to expand our research on the interface between water and energy challenges. The energy sector tends to become more water-intensive per joule supplied, while the water sector is becoming more energy-intensive per cubic metre of water supply. Coherent water-energy policies – combining different renewable energy, water supply and recycling technologies – are key to a sustainable future, reducing both carbon and water footprints. Smart cities will integrate water and energy supply infrastructure and make use of smart grids, circular economy concepts and new ways of governance. This position focuses on scientific research necessary to develop pathways towards low carbon and water footprint economies, by assessing different technologies over their life cycle and particularly the effectiveness of the conjunct use of different technologies. The assistant professor will develop and carry out research in the field of water and energy, teach at Bachelor and Master level, guide Bachelor and Master students in their thesis writing, be daily supervisor of PhD students, and acquire research funds. There will be strong collaboration with the other members of the Water Management group, as well as with researchers within the Engineering Technology Faculty and the University working in related fields of study.
