The ECIU has put focus on three main areas of activities:

• The ECIU Graduate School
• Improved Student and Staff Mobility
• University-Industry Interaction

Most activities are consequently placed within one of these headings, though if a smaller group of member institutions wishes to engage in other activities outside of these headings, these smaller groups are welcomed to do so. However, overarching general ECIU activities are placed within these 3 main headings. The widespread activities within the ECIU are organised as either Projects or Thematic Work Groups. The organisation into projects allow for both flexibility and distributed responsibility (with a university/project manager being responsible of specific projects) whereas the working groups allow for thematic focussing.
